The 1975 exhibition: Media Index

A Book-Catalogue of Canadian Art
Windsor Daily Star
14 Jun 1975
A review of assistant curator Charles Hill?s catalogue for the exhibition Canadian Painting in the Thirties, organized by the National Gallery of Canada. The book seeks to show the transition from the nationalistic Group of Seven to the internationalist approach of Montreal?s Contemporary Arts Society. Author Norah-Jean Perkin criticizes the catalogue for its ponderous style and unattractive layout, but praises it for its interesting content. It examines various artist societies, the question of the artist?s role in society, and the financial difficulties encountered by artists during the Depression. Perkin adds that there is even an element of humour in a quotation from David Milne. The catalogue is published by the National Museums Corporation.
